Kindness for the controller

The would/could/should haves โ€“ part of our entitled commentary to God about our take on life after events happen. While itโ€™s perfectly understandable and good to review things that went wrong in order to prevent them from going (as) wrong next time, itโ€™s presumption to read God the riot act. We simply donโ€™t have the equipment or certainly the authority to instruct the Lord of our lives as to how things SHOULD have gone.

For Martha, this was completely in character. Though she followed this statement with โ€œBut even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.โ€ (v 22), that was a self-perceived consolation to the sovereign will of Martha. This was the person who bossed her family around โ€“ taking umbrage that her sister Mary would not help her do her frantic, frenetic (and never ending) preparation, cleaning and (re)ordering of things for the guests. No, said Jesus, you can be like that, but Mary will certainly be allowed to sit and listen regardless.

It’s miraculous Jesus did up upbraid Martha โ€“ cut her down to size and knock her off her high horse. But he did not. As always, Jesus knew what was in a person, and Martha was hurting inside. We have no history regarding her past, but the need for control and intolerance of things not going according to plan is well understood even in our own lives. Martha had just lost her brother. Among the spectrum of things going wrong, that would be a biggie. Her pain in watching a loved one get sick and die is a well-known human experience. One of the earliest expressions of grief is anger โ€“ which blames. Thereโ€™s little question that Martha had seen loss, along with personal criticism and shame. She felt things deeply.

It would seem a suitable emotional reaction to put Martha in her place, to let her know how selfish her manipulative control really was. But Jesus didnโ€™t do that and itโ€™s remarkable. Instead, Jesus grieved with her and then showed real sovereignty โ€“ that of Almighty God โ€“ and raised her brother Lazarus from the dead. Thatโ€™s how God moves in the lives of the bossy, controlling, bullying people โ€“ shows them goodness in the dearest way.

It is so easy to sting back the people who dig and weasel and push and scratch their way into ordering your life according to THEIR program. Jesus shows what they need. Hardly acquiescence to their insistent wranglings but kindness in spite of them and in response to them. As usual, Jesus turns the world upside down and heals it. Heโ€™s glorious.

Dodging a despot’s paranoia

David was a rising star in Israel. The esteem he was held in had surpassed that of King Saul. That didnโ€™t just irk Saul, it drove him into deep suspicion.

There was presumed treachery that filled Saulโ€™s heart and his thinking:

Now, Samuel the prophet had already told Saul that he had been rejected as king โ€“ by God. Saulโ€™s hold on power, then, was only by human means. And in the tradition of royal families, there was a dynasty to be upheld and defended. Threats like David needed to be eliminated.

But David had no intention of overthrowing Saul; he served the king with exemplary loyalty. He was NOT, as the king accused, lying in wait for him. He was fleeing for his life from a murderous tyrant.

The paranoia that governs the life of some in power causes acts of malice towards even the most innocent and upstanding people under them. Indeed, the worst thing you can do under a tyrant is do your job well. Any acclaim that comes your way is perceived as something taken away from the despot. There can only be one star โ€“ the ruler.

While autocratic, tyrannical, even murderous rulers do exist in the world even today I am thankful to never have one running political things where I have lived; at least to the extent of hunting down their enemies to kill them physically. However, the controlling spirit of stultifying leadership is everywhere, and I have seen that.

If Iโ€™m under such an authority, I do think itโ€™s Godโ€™s will and self-preservation to escape or hideout in the corners such as David did. While it is part of any employment to do what it takes to advance the corporation or organization, being slain in reputation, limited in future development or otherwise discredited and disparaged is harmful to the soul. I have been there; and my refuge was lateral movement. Escape is not always possible, so shelter is advisable. I prayed, I moved as I saw opportunity.

If I AM in a role of authority, woe to me if I become jealous towards those who report to me – I need to fight that zealously. For indeed, may they be more gifted and productive than I am. I need to promote them, even above and beyond me, seeing my role in their lives as nurturer, even for a short season. And in that role, I rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15), at any advancement.

Hierarchy is solidly scriptural and may I live in the structure with a heart after God.

Fellowship of murderers

The annual prisoner freedom ritual was meant to keep the peace between Rome and those of occupied Israel. There is no biblical record of it being done throughout the Roman Empire, but that would be consistent with the concessions made to maintain control yet allow some local political fervor to simmer. Indeed, the Pax Romana (Peace of Rome) operated at the tips of swords and spears. So, not really peace at all.

That Barabbas was a murderer (likely of one of the opponents of Israel) was an appeal to his candidacy for release. But that he was a murderer at all was perhaps more so, for his advocates were actively using Roman force to murder the One who served neither their aspirations nor that of Rome โ€“ Jesus Christ. He was far scarier than any mere criminal or insurrectionist, because His insurrection was against their sin and corrupt authority. He had to go.

The riddle of the cross is that when humankind does its worst, Godโ€™s best results. Murderers free murderers and at some level even flaunt their actions with a destructive arrogance that hurts themselves more than anyone else. God pays love forward through His Son and establishes eternal supremacy over the small reign of small people.

The cross wins. Always and forever. In my life and that of all humanity.

Indignation – anger or annoyance provoked by what is perceived as unfair treatment โ€“ is a human sentiment that can be produced by a perceived lack of respect or regard for high position and authority. Rank rebellion very often creates indignation among the powers that be, because it is a challenge to their position as the powers that be. In the praise that accompanied Jesusโ€™ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, there was high regard afforded the Lord for all he had done for people. The chief priests and scribes had never been praised like that.โ€‚It was not rebellion but celebration.โ€‚Yet, they were angry.

Jesus did not back down when they confronted him. This โ€œriff raffโ€ was acting in complete propriety. The infants and young children were glorifying God in the person of His Son. At the core of the objection was his identity. And THAT was at the core of why he was executed; the authorities accused him of blasphemy.

The Lord had prepared โ€“ ordained โ€“ the praise of the people. It was predestined that the people would shout โ€œHosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!โ€ (21:9). And Jesus was predestined to ride the donkey into town (Zechariah 9:9, more than 500 years before). The accomplishment of Godโ€™s ordained plans dwarfs the intents and wranglings of potentates and their minions, however powerful and exalted.

Am I among those laying down their cloaks and palm branches to welcome this gentle King riding the donkey? Or am I objecting to the hubbub and fuss? Do I crown him King or just a momentary celebrity who had some healing powers? It is a critical decision to this day.

Jesus is Lord.

Generosity and Labor

Matthew 20:15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?โ€™

The master of the field had decided to give equal wages to all his workers no matter how long they had worked.ย  The ones who had been at it the longest were upset by this, since they only earned the same as those who had worked a few hours.ย  It was a labor dispute.

Then the master replied with the questions above.  There are 2 aspects to his words:

  1. The protesting workers had been paid what they had agreed, but considered that they had control of what all others were paid.ย  They wanted equal pay for equal work but the master decided differently. ย At the heart of that is an assumption that they thought the money was theirs to distribute, not his.
  2. The masterโ€™s intent was generosity.ย  In a day and in a place where people lived hand to mouth, a dayโ€™s wages would ensure a family ate that night only.ย  He wanted no one to starve.ย  Nobody in the story was lazy, they were just unemployed, even into the late afternoon.

For 1., state-level socialism does in fact remove ownership of fields and the wherewithal to pay workers from society.  The state is the master and its wages and conditions are engineered and metered.  The workers get their way โ€“ equal pay for equal work.  Except that corruption invariably creeps in and work ethic degrades because there is no reason to work well or even care about oneโ€™s toil.  There is no advancement and there is no reward for extra diligence.

Ownership of resources allows for incentivizing good attitude and extra work.  If a โ€œmasterโ€ grows in wealth, his/her resources can be re-invested in people and entities that will continue to grow.  Greed notwithstanding, the organic seeding of resources has the often-realized potential of causing people and corporate entities to thrive.  Individuals can accumulate wealth as well, becoming โ€œmastersโ€ in their own right; itโ€™s part of the system. 

As a follower of Jesus, I believe all I have belongs to God.  Not a few times have people accused and insinuated that I need to give here or there โ€“ to them or others in need.  Yet what I have is mine to steward, to pray for wisdom about how and where to give and invest.  I am allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me.

For 2., the scourge of the wealthy โ€“ their greed โ€“ is vividly exposed.  If I want to protect freedom of resource distribution and the growth of my estate and the community and nation, I MUST practice generosity.  Greed is why socialism arose and why it keeps its place as an alternative to free enterprise.  And greed is not only the practice of the well-to-do (though being greedy with a lot has larger impact).  Ten thousand mini-misers have the same effect as one wealthy one.  The workers in the story were not generous to be sure; they wanted what was coming to them and a strict limit to what the late arrivals were paid.  They did indeed begrudge the generosity of the master.

God is infinitely generous.  His reward is not โ€œfairโ€ as humans would compute it, but abounding in grace as an expression of unconditional love.  If I receive the free gift of salvation โ€“ and I do โ€“ I cannot with integrity begrudge the generosity of my God towards those who donโ€™t deserve it in my eyes.  Let me learn this deeply.

“Well done, my good and faithful servant” was NOT uttered for the third servant, the one with only one mina to invest. Instead, he found judgment. In his testimony, the servant said that he knew the master was a hard man, reaping where he had not sown. Basically, an oppressive, upper class slave owner. It was a false accusation, and very revealing as to his behavior in life.

What keeps God’s people faithful is not rote obedience to instruction. Faithful means “full of faith” and the good and faithful servant must believe according to

The faith that God is good and that reward awaits investment in the Kingdom of God sustains believers. God names the reward and how and when it is dispensed. Continuing the work of employing all one’s gifts – even as they grow in number and size – and across all seasons, circumstances and trials – is the exertion of faith that saves and grows God’s Kingdom.

The accusing servant was condemned for his attitude for it had poisoned his life. There are any number of voices that would promote enablement and victimhood where simple faith takes stock of the good things – even if they are less than those of others – and puts them to productive use.

What do I have? How can I use it for God? Very simple questions whose answers and resulting actions establish my own faithfulness.

Responding to accusatory questions about his ministry, Jesus asked “Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.” (v 21). That was considered impudent and disrespectful towards the high priest Caiaphas, for which he was struck by those around him. Yet, as the Jewish leaders turned him over to Pilate, Rome’s authority over them, they felt very free to answer his question with their own arrogance. There was a clear, ongoing conciliatory placation of the people of Israel by Pilate; it was in his interest to maintain civil calm and good relations with the nation of Israel.

This afforded the chief priest and his henchmen the opportunity to push Pilate around. There was no love lost between the two layers of power and authority. The Jews hated the Roman occupation and the occupiers themselves. And vice versa, to be sure.

It is a clear sign of a despot in power that demands compliant respect and abuses those who it believes fails to tow the line. In that regard, even asking honest questions that interrupt the human -ordained rush to “justice” – is seen as rebellion. And the attitude towards authorities above despots – whether human or divine – is lip service to protocol formalities with an underlying acrimony to anyone or anything that would presume to hold power over the tyrant.

This is a direct mirror of the posture of Satan in Isaiah 14:

That is, the Jewish leadership longed to rule over all the world and thought themselves worthy of that rule. The ultimate riddle was that they crucified the only One who was worthy of that rule, out of spite and rivalry.

Where is my despotism? Where do I presume to know it all and see it all? Where do I practice Joe Walsh’s lyrics:

… where I should be advancing those below me and supporting those above me (vs. merely passing a test)?

There is no authority above Jesus Christ; every earthly tyrant will one can concede that. And Jesus rules with love and mercy, which are the delightful enforcers of his reign. Let me live in love knowing that His kingdom is not of this world.

“If you do well” – The acceptable offering

Genesis 4:6-7The Lord said to Cain, โ€œWhy are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.โ€

Cain, the older brother, had made an offering to God.ย  His younger brother Abel had done the same.ย  The narrative in Genesis 4 says that the Lord โ€œhad regardโ€ for Abelโ€™s offering, but not that of Cain.ย  There has been much commentary about exactly what was worthy about Abelโ€™s offering that was NOT in Cainโ€™s, but in truth the text does not say โ€œand hereโ€™s whyโ€.ย  The point of the text is that there was now, for the first time in humanity, sibling rivalry.ย  And it would turn out to be murderous.

It is a familiar trend (that is, a trend of families) that older children are the authority over their younger siblings.ย  It starts with basic development like walking and talking, but can and does easily extend into adulthood with job skills, achievements, etc.ย  At the very least, the older siblings tend to do things first.

Itโ€™s not reading into the story too much to say that when the younger Abel receives commendation that Cain does not, that would aggravate this older sibling order.  It would be an insult, as indeed it was.  Cain was devastated.

The verses above show a brief word from God towards the angered and sullen Cain that indicates a divine perspective that Cain needed to hear, though he would choose NOT to hear it.  And it is this: That Godโ€™s judgment about the offering had nothing to do with picking favorites.  It was simply Godโ€™s disposition towards a particular work โ€“ an offering.  And for whatever reason Cainโ€™s wasnโ€™t accepted, future offerings certainly COULD be accepted. 

โ€œIf you do wellโ€ is a conditional that of which Cain no doubt knew the meaning.  But he was so clouded in the presently felt rejection, he couldnโ€™t hear it.

โ€œIf you do not do wellโ€ is the flip side of that conditional and it is accompanied by the outplay of sin.  And Cain immediately demonstrated what that meant as he murdered his brother over a rejected offering.

Do I battle for my offering to be accepted?  To be honest, in the intricacies of rivalry, I have long fought that way, though the instruction from the Word is very clear:

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship.

Though my offering is acceptable, my eyes can still be fixated upon those who appear to have an even MORE acceptable offering.  And in that is the โ€œIf you do not do wellโ€ for my life.  The resentment that arises from such comparison never produces anything righteous.  Even if it causes me to surpass those I strive against, my motives become so polluted as to make my offering far less than holy and thus, far below what is pleasing to God. 

Let me begin thinking that God chooses many, many favorites and that I am certainly one of them.  The exclusive favorite concept is for the Olympics and the Superbowl, not for my lifeโ€™s offering before God.

Let me learn again to humbly offer and give, ignoring the noise of comparison and all its trappings.  Amen.

The unwarranted wail of the obedient

Luke 15:30ย But when this son of yours who has squandered your propertyย with prostitutesย comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!โ€™

Itโ€™s a parable, a story with made-up characters.ย  But because Jesus told it, our minds and souls immediately plug real people into the roles, because they are always archetypes of human beings in our lives.ย  We know people like that.

These words were spoken by the older son of the Prodigal Son, the younger brother who demanded his inheritance money before his father died and then wasted it on wild living.ย  He had come back, ready to be a slave and not a son, but his father would have none of that.ย  He was restored to sonship immediately upon his return with great fanfare and celebration.

The older son bitterly resented his brother, in fact refused to call him his brother โ€“ โ€œthis son of yoursโ€ intentionally skirts the fact that they are brothers.ย  Even if the father had not disowned the younger brother, his older sibling had.

The resentment of those who have remained faithful to a role, relationship or life calling while others have strayed and then returned is founded in envy.ย  This son wanted to be celebrated by his father and felt he had deserved it by virtue of faithfulness.ย  His father replied that he could celebrate any time, but that his brotherโ€™s return was life from the dead, so they MUST celebrate.

Where do I fail to rejoice with those who rejoice?ย  To probe my soul –ย  where is my reticence (my reserve) hiding real resentment?

The root of the anger by the older brother is a feeling of being unappreciated.ย  Let me recall seeing it in myself – it takes selective inventory of work done, counting every scar, personal cost and crippling fatigue that plagues all hard work.ย  And arguably we NEED to be validated and celebrated from time to time as we NEED to know and chronicle how our gifts and competencies are developing.ย  And thereโ€™s nothing wrong with having needs.

But if I feel injustice when someone else is celebrated, I need to get over myself.ย  Because they have needs as well.ย  The younger brother needed to have his decision to come back validated and joyfully underscored.ย  He had himself been victimized by those who loved his money but couldnโ€™t care less about him, but at this point he had returned to those who loved him.ย  Except for his older brother.

Donโ€™t be a resentful sibling when the stray returns.ย  Just donโ€™t โ€“ it hurts you.

The structures and tactics of conflict

Acts 16:20-21 They brought them before the magistrates and said, โ€œThese men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.โ€

In Philippi, there was a slave who told the future.ย  Her masters made money from her gift, though it was not a gift at all but a spirit that was working through her.ย  When Paul and Silas went into the city and were preaching the gospel, she followed them around, incessantly saying โ€œ These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.โ€ย  While this could initially be seen as encouragement, after several days it got old and so annoyed Paul that he cast the spirit out of the slave and she became incapable of fortune-telling.

Her owners were infuriated, so they rabble-roused a crowd and came before the authorities with the charge above.ย  It is very important to note that their charge had NOTHING to do with their underlying conflict.ย  The charge was only effective in gaining an angry crowd to go along with them, making a strong enough accusation to ensure the punishment of those who they felt had stolen from them.

This shows the structures and tactics of conflict.ย  The inner motives of aggression and vengeance are such powerful drivers that the origin of the argument is quickly lost.ย  Once this happens, lies and contrived accusations become the norm.ย  Woe to the judge or magistrate to make sense of what is said or done.ย  Teasing the truth out of such an atmosphere requires both wisdom and strong conviction, neither of which might be present.

But I am the judge of such conflict in my own life.ย  I can see the mechanisms working, conjuring up reasons to justify my position which have nothing to do with the deeper hurt or injustice.ย  Let me pray to uncover those base reasons and deal with them at the core of my soul, in prayer then in heartfelt communication with my offender(s).ย  Whatever their response is, let me at least be in touch with what’s really going on in me.ย  May I cut short the contriving schemes my clever mind hatches and simply forgive, grieve and move on.

And when conflict is brought before me, either as the accused offender or the judge, let me learn to discern what is really going on.ย  Let me ask deep questions that have nothing to do with the surface charges and insinuations, for they are craftily constructed veneers over the pain that is really the issue.ย  Then, learning where the true hurt lies, let me apologize, make amends or do justly according to what would acknowledge it, re-establish empathy and heal.
