The loving eye and the bridle

David came to his senses in Psalm 32 and opened his life to God, confessing sin and receiving forgiveness. When he had remained silent (vv 3-4) it had physical consequences โ€“ pain and exhaustion. But when he allowed Godโ€™s voice and conviction to come into his soul, he received pardon and regained Godโ€™s protection over his life. The famous โ€œYou are my hiding placeโ€ lyrics (v 7) are among the greatest statements in the Word of God about the shelter provided to the penitent.

The above verses are written as Godโ€™s words to David, and all readers. Whatever sin was confessed and forgiven is forgotten and God shows the way forward. It is his instruction that leads โ€“ and never into more iniquity. His advice and direction come from a motive of pure love and never manipulative self-advancement (God is quite secure as Lord over the universe).

Yet, obstinance is always a possible reaction from the human heart. Whether it stems from unbelief in Godโ€™s love and goodness or a desire to plot oneโ€™s own course, it reduces the person being directed to the mentality and willfulness of a brute animal. Even as humankind understands the need for means of controlling horses and mules, the rebellion of heart against God who grants the dignity of free will is held up as a right. And a right it is, but not without consequence.

Instruction is only good if it is imported as direction. Otherwise, it sits only as a varying opinion, and there is no shortage of those on the earth. Do I believe there is a God? Yes. Do I believe Godโ€™s instruction is a better teacher than my own wayward heart? Yes.

The walk is treacherous still, for the motives of people creep in, some even portending to speak for God โ€“ and others who really do speak for God in my life. The โ€œloving eyeโ€ is key for me to see. God is for my good, not my control or frustration. May I see and walk with that knowledge. Amen.

Logs and specks

Luke 6:42 How can you say to your brother, โ€˜Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,โ€™ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brotherโ€™s eye.

Fault-finding putdown artists are actors (hypocrites), says Jesus.  They have no intention of facing up to their own shortcomings, but only delight in point those out in others.  There is a preadolescent mindset that begins with the discovery that demeaning others makes one feel powerful and superior.  Itโ€™s a lie, says the Lord, for it leaves out the most important ingredient of all โ€“ humility.

Motives are cleansed by allowing God to convict and correct.ย  The trouble is that fault-finders cannot distinguish conviction and condemnation.ย  They count on condemnation disqualifying and eliminating others, so they cannot allow any scrutiny to be applied to their hearts or lives.ย  No, says Jesus, โ€œfirst take the log out of your own eyeโ€ โ€“ let the truth penetrate your life, be forgiven and freed, THEN you will understand conviction and freedom for others.ย  At that point, when you remove THEIR speck, it will be out of love and desire for their best.

The teaching does NOT negate care to remove otherโ€™s specks.  My own log โ€“ however huge and ugly – does not make me unable to help others with their (albeit smaller) issues.

If I am in the business of the putdown of others, I then need to ask about my own state before God.  I can trust this โ€“ itโ€™s a leading indicator of my own need for conviction, forgiveness, cleansing/healing and freedom.  If and when my motives are pure โ€“ that is, I am no hypocrite but instead fully acknowledge my own imperfection and struggles โ€“ I can love people enough to confront them with things they may not see in themselves.  For itโ€™s no mistake the analogy involves the organ through which we see โ€“ we cannot see through a speck.

I rejoice in the freedom God gives me and all his children.  It never comes without struggle and the first personโ€™s struggle I deal with is my own.  And then there is victory for us all!

Fellowship of murderers

The annual prisoner freedom ritual was meant to keep the peace between Rome and those of occupied Israel. There is no biblical record of it being done throughout the Roman Empire, but that would be consistent with the concessions made to maintain control yet allow some local political fervor to simmer. Indeed, the Pax Romana (Peace of Rome) operated at the tips of swords and spears. So, not really peace at all.

That Barabbas was a murderer (likely of one of the opponents of Israel) was an appeal to his candidacy for release. But that he was a murderer at all was perhaps more so, for his advocates were actively using Roman force to murder the One who served neither their aspirations nor that of Rome โ€“ Jesus Christ. He was far scarier than any mere criminal or insurrectionist, because His insurrection was against their sin and corrupt authority. He had to go.

The riddle of the cross is that when humankind does its worst, Godโ€™s best results. Murderers free murderers and at some level even flaunt their actions with a destructive arrogance that hurts themselves more than anyone else. God pays love forward through His Son and establishes eternal supremacy over the small reign of small people.

The cross wins. Always and forever. In my life and that of all humanity.

Cry of the beggar

Mark 10:48-49 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, โ€œSon of David, have mercy on me!โ€ And Jesus stopped and said, โ€œCall him.โ€ And they called the blind man, saying to him, โ€œTake heart. Get up; he is calling you.โ€

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar.ย  His trade was dictated by his physical state; there was no program to help the poor and afflicted in Roman-occupied first century Israel.ย  As part of the beggar-underclass of people, he was very used to raising his voice for alms and any mercy that he could get to come his way.

Thereโ€™s also little doubt that Bart knew about Jesus โ€“ one who didnโ€™t just give alms but who healed blindness itself.  If that could happen, his entire life would change radically.  He could be a productive person.  Itโ€™s hard to consider all the possibilities and plans he had imagined for his entire life that could transpire if he could only see.

But when he raised his voice, calling on the โ€œSon of Davidโ€ โ€“ a well-known name for Messiah, that those around him thought he was only begging as usual.  They told him to be silent, thinking perhaps that common beggars had no business involving Jesus.  Begging was not his intent, though, and their chiding and squelching his voice had the net effect of keeping him blind and poor.  Their pushing him out of the way was oppressive and cruel.

Jesus stopped and would ask him what he wanted.  Bart couldโ€™ve asked for great riches, to have his calluses healed or anything else.  He asked to see.  And see he did.

Do I

  1. Assert myself when I have a real need only Jesus can meet?ย  Bartimaeus gave voice to the yearning of his heart and would not be silenced.ย  Do I do that, or slink back into a beggarly life of want?ย  Can the voices of others, perhaps bothered by my very presence, shout me down and scoff me underfoot?ย  Hear the (perhaps annoying) cry of the poor man, O my soul!ย  Do not be silenced!
  2. Find my myself among the annoyed, insisting the loud beggar cease his/her rantings?ย  For sure there is dysfunctional entitlement.ย  But there is also a need to be heard and listened to.ย  Do I listen?ย  Do I pause to hear the stories of the poor one?ย  Or do I instead call his/her voice a distracting bother, with no substance behind the noise that fills my ears?ย  O my soul, learn to listen, for the stories youโ€™ll hear will inform all mercy and wisdom.

So be it.

Turning towards the good news

Mark 1 covers a lot of history of Jesusโ€™ life in just a few verses, but this statement from the Lord at the beginning of his ministry is both terse and deeply engaging.

The time being โ€œfulfilledโ€ provides the historical context for the life and ministry of Jesus. It happened exactly when God determined it would, and all things were set in place. From the dire spiritual state of the nation of Israel to the rule of Rome, with all the roads and travel lanes that had opened, the point of Jesusโ€™ entry onto the scene was ordained.

The kingdom of God being โ€œat handโ€ announced what was now available through Christ. Humankind would be touched as never before with miracles, teaching and opportunity to walk out lives directed and blessed by God the Father in Heaven. โ€œItโ€™s right hereโ€ says Jesus, come and get it.

There is no translation of the Greek word for gospel – ฮตแฝฮฑฮณฮณฮญฮปฮนฮฟฮฝ (pronounced euangelion) โ€“ means anything gloomy or burdensome. It simply means good (โ€œeuโ€ prefix) news or message (angelion). Jesus repeatedly urges people to believe it โ€“ that there is good will from God for them in life โ€“ both to save and restore and give hope and a future. It makes all the difference in how people live.

Coupled with the word for โ€œgospelโ€, โ€œrepentโ€ โ€“ meaning turn and go the other way โ€“ refers to mindset and faith that is โ€œbad newsโ€ or at least laced with that. Rather than thinking about this sin or that, the call is to change our minds and believe that God loves and cares for us. All other actions and thoughts related to believing the bad news simply fall away โ€“ though some certainly die hard.

Let me then believe, practice and thus preach the good news where and when God enables and opens the door. He loves me and loves us and wants the best for us.

Generosity and Labor

Matthew 20:15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?โ€™

The master of the field had decided to give equal wages to all his workers no matter how long they had worked.ย  The ones who had been at it the longest were upset by this, since they only earned the same as those who had worked a few hours.ย  It was a labor dispute.

Then the master replied with the questions above.  There are 2 aspects to his words:

  1. The protesting workers had been paid what they had agreed, but considered that they had control of what all others were paid.ย  They wanted equal pay for equal work but the master decided differently. ย At the heart of that is an assumption that they thought the money was theirs to distribute, not his.
  2. The masterโ€™s intent was generosity.ย  In a day and in a place where people lived hand to mouth, a dayโ€™s wages would ensure a family ate that night only.ย  He wanted no one to starve.ย  Nobody in the story was lazy, they were just unemployed, even into the late afternoon.

For 1., state-level socialism does in fact remove ownership of fields and the wherewithal to pay workers from society.  The state is the master and its wages and conditions are engineered and metered.  The workers get their way โ€“ equal pay for equal work.  Except that corruption invariably creeps in and work ethic degrades because there is no reason to work well or even care about oneโ€™s toil.  There is no advancement and there is no reward for extra diligence.

Ownership of resources allows for incentivizing good attitude and extra work.  If a โ€œmasterโ€ grows in wealth, his/her resources can be re-invested in people and entities that will continue to grow.  Greed notwithstanding, the organic seeding of resources has the often-realized potential of causing people and corporate entities to thrive.  Individuals can accumulate wealth as well, becoming โ€œmastersโ€ in their own right; itโ€™s part of the system. 

As a follower of Jesus, I believe all I have belongs to God.  Not a few times have people accused and insinuated that I need to give here or there โ€“ to them or others in need.  Yet what I have is mine to steward, to pray for wisdom about how and where to give and invest.  I am allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me.

For 2., the scourge of the wealthy โ€“ their greed โ€“ is vividly exposed.  If I want to protect freedom of resource distribution and the growth of my estate and the community and nation, I MUST practice generosity.  Greed is why socialism arose and why it keeps its place as an alternative to free enterprise.  And greed is not only the practice of the well-to-do (though being greedy with a lot has larger impact).  Ten thousand mini-misers have the same effect as one wealthy one.  The workers in the story were not generous to be sure; they wanted what was coming to them and a strict limit to what the late arrivals were paid.  They did indeed begrudge the generosity of the master.

God is infinitely generous.  His reward is not โ€œfairโ€ as humans would compute it, but abounding in grace as an expression of unconditional love.  If I receive the free gift of salvation โ€“ and I do โ€“ I cannot with integrity begrudge the generosity of my God towards those who donโ€™t deserve it in my eyes.  Let me learn this deeply.

Filling the house

Matthew 12:43-45 โ€œWhen the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, โ€˜I will return to my house from which I came.โ€™ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.ย  Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.โ€

Evil can be removed by deliverance or conquest, but unless it is replaced with virtue and righteousness, it will come back in greater proportions.ย  Jesus regularly cast out demons.ย  The behavior and effects those spirits caused was personally and socially destructive.ย 

The phenomenon of their returning to their former hosts is chilling and shows the need for a second spiritual act to be sure that the โ€œhouseโ€ is NOT empty.  That is, Jesus must fill the โ€œhouseโ€.  The Holy Spirit, infinitely more powerful than any demon, will not cohabitate with any other spirit.  In God there is no darkness.

And Jesus did not leave the story with a single person re-possessed by the devil.  He concluded by saying this was also the tale of his evil generation.  In that sense, his ministry to that generation of people did accomplish the advent of the Kingdom of God, but if unbelief persisted, it was only temporary.   Believers went on in their liberty from the Evil One, for they obtained an infilling that left the โ€œhouseโ€ full and redeemed.

Salvation is not always readily noticed.  Sin can persist along with all the sickness and trials of the human condition.  (Guaranteed divine health is a proud travesty)  So if I look at the valleys of life and forget with whom I am filled, I may need reminding of the permanent state of my deliverance, ongoing salvation and destiny.  Though I may struggle, there is no โ€œre-entryโ€ of evil.  That battle is won.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

The reward of the cheerful heart

Paul was collecting an offering for the Jerusalem church, the spiritual โ€œmother churchโ€. There was a bad famine in Israel and people were starving. From the more affluent Gentile believers, Paul issued a pointed and passionate challenge โ€“ Give generously and you will see reward in your life. Period.

While the call is not to abandon reason in oneโ€™s giving, it absolutely entails taking reason off the throne of heart and adopting compassion that opens the wallet or makes available the resource.

To be sure, there is wisdom to know that the appeal has integrity and the funds and resources will actually go where the gatherer says (e.g. gifts to poor nations routinely go through corrupt regimes and leaders, with little or nothing getting to the needy). And giving that enables destructive behavior is not what this passage describes.

Iโ€™m challenged to name the ways generosity is threatened, because truly these do overrule the appeal in myself and others if we let them:

Put more vividly, will I give to an ungrateful, snarling grouse whose hunger (in my exalted opinion) is self-inflicted? I should know that if I do not, my own ungrateful, snarling soul will remain bereft of the promised reward. I do not have the equipment to gauge the outcome in the life of the recipient. Those who receive donโ€™t need to earn generosity.

๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ. I (or someone else) want(s) to look generous as an ulterior motive. Or, giving only to people and causes that align with my political sensibilities. Donations to causes are FINE, but not to be confused with generosity. The reward for that is far from certain and dubious from the outset.

๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ. No, the freedom to give or not give is implicit in the process. There is no inherent punishment for withholding, though a miserly heart does get its own dark โ€œrewardโ€. But appeals that project attitudes and pronounce dire consequences to raise funds carry an element of sales ploys.

๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต. For sure there is reward promised in scripture, and experienced in the action itself. But if that payback becomes the motive for giving, it puts the giver in a seat only God can fill. Despite the current popular and pervasive teaching, we do not name our reward in substance or detail of its delivery. Our lives become blessable through giving, no more.

โ€ฆ and there is certainly enough promise and fulfillment to make us the โ€œcheerful giverโ€ that God loves.

The blind man, whose cries the crowd tried to squelch, nonetheless came before Jesus. Now it was obvious he was blind, but wanted him to say he wanted to see. It’s not that anyone – including Jesus- expected the man to want an extra tunic, say. Our requests for healing and deliverance and all other things must proceed from our mouths. It’s part of the healing process and makes us confront any self-deprecating and destructive ideas of deserving our maladies and expecting no more from life than our limitations all the while seeing God’s restoration available.

Also, there is faith in Christ – His person and goodwill and abilities – that God uses to heal us. The blind man’s faith made him well.

For 2000+ years, believers have wrangled, accused and proudly asserted formulas and theories and negating condemnations as to why healings don’t happen. We know that they also did not always happen among the disciples at Jesus time, and yes, overwhelmingly often Jesus pointed to the absence of faith. Yet Jesus also helped a desperate father in his unbelief and excommunicated NONE of those of little faith. The message there is that faith grows.

Faith in Jesus encompasses much more than healing. Indeed, faith in Jesus takes healing off the pedestal of proof of any human achievement or possession. It mightily proves God’s intentions for health and human well-being, acting as a spectacular pointer to the person of Jesus.

I am to never stop contending for healing; never surrender the brokenness of this world as the final word or state. Salvation has worked its wonders in my life as it will do so in the lives of all who enter in. Healed wounds without and within are its signature marks; let me take a true and historical inventory of them all as I have seen and experienced. And I will see very vividly that my faith has made me well. I was blind and now I see.

Certainly there was no precept or tenet or detailed instruction in the Law of Moses against healing. The Pharisees waiting to accuse Jesus probably knew that, but held to later, additive teaching of Jewish scholars leading up to their day. To be fair, the trauma of the exile to Babylon had created a hyper-legalistic fervor in their religion thought to keep it from happening again.

Their reason to forbid Jesus to heal also had a much lower motivation- jealousy. God the Son was empowered to heal diseases and deliver the people from demonic oppression, among other things. It’s apparent that some of the Jewish religious leaders had indeed been gifted in deliverance (see Matthew 12:27) but certainly not with the effectiveness of Jesus, of whom it was said healed everyone.

Spectacular miracles like Jesus performed attracted people and with a fervor not present in traditional religious gathering. The healing hand of God was revealed, undeniable expressions of His goodwill. The contradiction to the fear-based religion touted by the religious leaders made them fear for their jobs, their community standing and for the nation of Israel – as they knew it – itself.

As Jesus vividly displayed immediately after this barbed question showed that yes, it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath. Or any other day. Doing the good that God calls people to do is more important that a dictated time of rest. Sabbath itself was always a celebration and delight in a good, loving God. Rest is required in life, but rest in God is deeper and more satisfying.

Let me guard my heart from jealousy. I certainly have no business vaunting myself or my views above God’s move. Nor is it helpful (or, to be stark – obedient) to let others impose limitations on God’s work in and through me. There is rest and there is love to be spread.
