David was a rising star in Israel. The esteem he was held in had surpassed that of King Saul. That didnโ€™t just irk Saul, it drove him into deep suspicion.

There was presumed treachery that filled Saulโ€™s heart and his thinking:

Now, Samuel the prophet had already told Saul that he had been rejected as king โ€“ by God. Saulโ€™s hold on power, then, was only by human means. And in the tradition of royal families, there was a dynasty to be upheld and defended. Threats like David needed to be eliminated.

But David had no intention of overthrowing Saul; he served the king with exemplary loyalty. He was NOT, as the king accused, lying in wait for him. He was fleeing for his life from a murderous tyrant.

The paranoia that governs the life of some in power causes acts of malice towards even the most innocent and upstanding people under them. Indeed, the worst thing you can do under a tyrant is do your job well. Any acclaim that comes your way is perceived as something taken away from the despot. There can only be one star โ€“ the ruler.

While autocratic, tyrannical, even murderous rulers do exist in the world even today I am thankful to never have one running political things where I have lived; at least to the extent of hunting down their enemies to kill them physically. However, the controlling spirit of stultifying leadership is everywhere, and I have seen that.

If Iโ€™m under such an authority, I do think itโ€™s Godโ€™s will and self-preservation to escape or hideout in the corners such as David did. While it is part of any employment to do what it takes to advance the corporation or organization, being slain in reputation, limited in future development or otherwise discredited and disparaged is harmful to the soul. I have been there; and my refuge was lateral movement. Escape is not always possible, so shelter is advisable. I prayed, I moved as I saw opportunity.

If I AM in a role of authority, woe to me if I become jealous towards those who report to me – I need to fight that zealously. For indeed, may they be more gifted and productive than I am. I need to promote them, even above and beyond me, seeing my role in their lives as nurturer, even for a short season. And in that role, I rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15), at any advancement.

Hierarchy is solidly scriptural and may I live in the structure with a heart after God.

REturning despite circumstance

John the Baptist was to have the ministry of turning โ€“ more precisely REturning โ€“ people back towards their God. Commensurate with that was a reconciliation between the generations and repentance of sin to Biblical โ€œwisdomโ€ or righteous precepts. It was to be done to prepare the people for someone and something greater to come.

John would later point to Jesus as that โ€œsomeoneโ€ to come. But inherent in this proclamation is a statement that the people of Israel were not ready to receive their Messiah. They had strayed (or were led astray) from following the ways of the Lord. In occupied, oppressed Israel, the compromised state of mind and path in life is understandable. Itโ€™s remarkable the God chose this time to send John the Baptist and Jesus.

Part and parcel of Johnโ€™s message was that oppression and discouragement were no excuse for not following the Lord. Indeed, there was a thriving and overcoming implicit in the ministry of the suffering and dying Messiah. THAT was not expected by anyone in first century Israel. What the people expected and wanted was a Messiah who would throw off Roman rule and re-establish Israel as THE world power. Jesus would indeed conquer Rome, though not through military/political power. Johnโ€™s ministry prepared the people for righteousness in the midst of suffering and overcoming despite trial and opposition.

Where do I explain away my ethical shortcomings and compromises with โ€œwhat Iโ€™ve been throughโ€? Where do I do that for groups of people of whom Iโ€™m a part? It doesnโ€™t wash and it doesnโ€™t mesh with the gospel I profess to follow. Perseverance and patience (literally โ€œlongsufferingโ€ in the original Greek) are products of following Jesus. Do I pray for them to develop and be lived out in my life? If not, I need to.

The annual prisoner freedom ritual was meant to keep the peace between Rome and those of occupied Israel. There is no biblical record of it being done throughout the Roman Empire, but that would be consistent with the concessions made to maintain control yet allow some local political fervor to simmer. Indeed, the Pax Romana (Peace of Rome) operated at the tips of swords and spears. So, not really peace at all.

That Barabbas was a murderer (likely of one of the opponents of Israel) was an appeal to his candidacy for release. But that he was a murderer at all was perhaps more so, for his advocates were actively using Roman force to murder the One who served neither their aspirations nor that of Rome โ€“ Jesus Christ. He was far scarier than any mere criminal or insurrectionist, because His insurrection was against their sin and corrupt authority. He had to go.

The riddle of the cross is that when humankind does its worst, Godโ€™s best results. Murderers free murderers and at some level even flaunt their actions with a destructive arrogance that hurts themselves more than anyone else. God pays love forward through His Son and establishes eternal supremacy over the small reign of small people.

The cross wins. Always and forever. In my life and that of all humanity.

The warped faith of a tyrant

Matthew 14:1-2 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, and he said to his servants, โ€œThis is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.โ€

In the family line of Herod, murderous oppression was a common way to maintain oneโ€™s reign.  Herod the Great had killed all the boys in Bethlehem in an attempt to snuff out Messianic prophecy.  His son Herod Antipas, in this passage, had murdered John the Baptist for calling out his unlawful marriage to Herodias, who had formerly been married to his half-brother Herod Philip. 

It is tempting to presume these men had no faith in God or his role in the affairs of humankind.ย  But the words above prove that they certainly did have a fearful faith in the God of Israel (Herodโ€™s line was Edomite).ย  For if in Herodโ€™s estimation John the Baptist could be raised and could perform miracles, he held the man he had beheaded in high esteem.ย  This is also verified in the account of Johnโ€™s execution elsewhere โ€“ Herod was afraid.

There is a misplaced presumption of faithlessness in bullies and oppressors.  They are often in desperate fear of judgment โ€“ they know what theyโ€™ve done is evil and see no way out except brutality and human force.  Yet, Jesus saves monsters; itโ€™s a fact and recurrent testimony.  Saul of Tarsus came to faith and many believers were still incredulous because he had singled out Jesus followers for persecution and destruction.  Yet, God saved.

Herod would never repent of his ways, and would later die a horrible death which is clear judgment of God.  But, the fact that he had enough faith to recognize the person of John the Baptist shows a projection onto God of tyrant โ€“ much like himself.  This provides prayer insight and wisdom concerning our dealings with such people.

May I never see God as one who imposes his will with violence and ruthlessness, but one who is slow to anger.  Let me never see God as one to be outmaneuvered via human wranglings and selfish pursuits.  Let me be pliable and listening to Godโ€™s heart, sensitive to his call and move.  In Jesusโ€™ name.   

Filling the house

Matthew 12:43-45 โ€œWhen the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, โ€˜I will return to my house from which I came.โ€™ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.ย  Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.โ€

Evil can be removed by deliverance or conquest, but unless it is replaced with virtue and righteousness, it will come back in greater proportions.ย  Jesus regularly cast out demons.ย  The behavior and effects those spirits caused was personally and socially destructive.ย 

The phenomenon of their returning to their former hosts is chilling and shows the need for a second spiritual act to be sure that the โ€œhouseโ€ is NOT empty.  That is, Jesus must fill the โ€œhouseโ€.  The Holy Spirit, infinitely more powerful than any demon, will not cohabitate with any other spirit.  In God there is no darkness.

And Jesus did not leave the story with a single person re-possessed by the devil.  He concluded by saying this was also the tale of his evil generation.  In that sense, his ministry to that generation of people did accomplish the advent of the Kingdom of God, but if unbelief persisted, it was only temporary.   Believers went on in their liberty from the Evil One, for they obtained an infilling that left the โ€œhouseโ€ full and redeemed.

Salvation is not always readily noticed.  Sin can persist along with all the sickness and trials of the human condition.  (Guaranteed divine health is a proud travesty)  So if I look at the valleys of life and forget with whom I am filled, I may need reminding of the permanent state of my deliverance, ongoing salvation and destiny.  Though I may struggle, there is no โ€œre-entryโ€ of evil.  That battle is won.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Bring me through

Job 1:8ย Then theย Lordย said to Satan, โ€œHave you considered my servant Job?ย There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears Godย and shuns evil.โ€

The heavenly discussion in Job 1 is unique in the Word of God.ย  God and Satan have it out over Job, a certified righteous individual on earth.ย  It is particularly unusual in that the accuser is not the one who mentions Job as a person guilty of this iniquity or that.ย  No, it is the Lord who brings up Jobโ€™s name.ย  Sometimes Iโ€™ve mused that if Job was there and knew what was going to happen, he would protest loudly โ€“ โ€œNO!ย  Do NOT bring me into this conversation!โ€ย  For Job would puzzle about all the disaster and theological rankling that would follow.ย  In all his suffering, his biggest question would be โ€œWhy?โ€

Far from a boasting match between God and Satan at the expense of a poor human, we have in the book of Job a vital picture of the testing of faith.ย  It is Satan who makes it a petty contest.ย  All the while God knows his servantโ€™s heart and even his limitations.ย 

I can read abandonment into the story, or abuse or oppression.  But God never abandons Job, and any abuse or oppression is on the part of the evil one.  Itโ€™s a universal script for the human condition.  For it is a constant temptation to blame God for every malady and trial I undergo.  And certainly, he allows these things in my life.  But God also knows what Iโ€™m made of โ€“ indeed, what God himself is building to this day โ€“ and knows the end from the beginning.  It is the supreme lesson of Jobโ€™s story that:

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

How could Paul, the writer of the book of Romans possibly have the assurance to say that โ€œwe knowโ€?  Only by walking through Job-like experiences.  Itโ€™s hardly a desirable path,  but itโ€™s part of being formed in Christ.

So I wonโ€™t be a fool and say โ€œBring it on!โ€ but I will lean in and say โ€œBring me through!โ€

Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, with many witnesses, including Pharisees who could not deny the miraculous work. Some of them began following Jesus at that point, but others returned to Jerusalem, concerned for what this meant to their standing and security. Their words above indicate a fear of lost prominence (“our place”) and the nation of Israel itself (“our nation”).

It was presumed, then, that Jesus was as they were, power-grubbing authority hounds who lorded what they knew and what they did over the people. And of course Jesus was after political control, inciting rebellion against the Roman occupiers. Jesus had never given any indication of those claims and projecting motives was just wrong.

It’s not that Jesus would ever uphold their leadership; they ran a corrupt system of perverse and diluted spirituality. That meant they were indeed in danger of losing their “place”. But that was happening in any case for in 70 AD the nation rebelled and their entire system was destroyed, temple and all. Towards the religious practice of Jews of Israel, Jesus could be seen as more of a reformer than rebel. Yet, the authorities would have none of it.

It is upon me to not defend my position or my nation or my church or my family from Jesus. Why would I do that? Because I am afraid of the change Jesus would bring. I might lose authority or influence. My country might become “weak” in its defenses or standing among nations. I might have to eat humble pie and admit and turn my sin and patterns of control and coercion.

I may never say I’d oppose Jesus and strongly state my allegiance to everything he says or does. But in fact the Holy Spirit is inexorable in revealing ways I still cling to my own ways, possessions and importance. Prestige is a subtle yet vicious idol.

God is good and grants all humanity with fulfillment, justice and truth. We have stuff and position and blessed trajectory in life all from God’s hand. None of that is retracted or relented. The temptation and worldly encouragement is to construct surroundings and systems that protect and accumulate those blessings in ways that benefit us above all else. That’s idolatry. That’s being afraid for “our place” and “our nation”.

Christ in us is better than that and

that is, wealth of all kinds. Let me (and let us) rest in that.

Drivers and leaders

In the 10th chapter of John’s gospel, Jesus spoke of himself as the good shepherd. And he described what that meant. In this verse, he spoke of how a shepherd leads his flock. They go nowhere he has not been before them. Nor are they left in silence without a voice to follow.

In sheep tending there is both a time to drive the sheep forward and a time to have them follow. Both modes of movement have their place and there is no difference in the caring heart of the shepherd. But in human relations, drivers of people use motivational means that belittle, shame and coerce. Leaders only ask people to follow and learn to trust their course of action and motives.

There was only ever one perfect shepherd; yet the model he set forth for leaders are clear. Nor was the contrast between his brand of leadership and that of the religious rulers who opposed him.

This has deep application.

I have grown weary and suspect of the driving leaders of this world. Industry and the corporate world will celebrate the achievements of such people – that their relentlessness with vision, goals and even people is at the heart of their superior success. Even as I may use the inventions and products from their years of reign and rule, I know well that the system that vaunts their style gives short shrift to leaders who nurture creativity and diligence in those under them in authority while producing people as well as things.

Corporate and ecclesiastical structure and values both tend to support driver/leaders; just the truth. The term “reports” has been fitted onto people under them as if their only role in life is to show pre-scripted progress. At all costs they will present evidence of doing well against expectations – even fabricating such evidence; for to not do so endangers their livelihood. (although that livelihood is actually in constant danger from the driver).

It is no compromise to accomplishment or mission or schedule to foster growth; the best leaders constantly work themselves out of their jobs. Servant/leaders who help their followers neither leave a wake of the wounded nor fail to make forward progress.

We are all invited to find shepherds in our lives who go before us instead of driving us from behind.

The Tyranny of Immobility

The demoniac that Jesus had delivered from satanic oppression was a terror to the community. He was forced to live away from other people. Yet, after the deliverance, the people were afraid. Why? Part of the answer likely lies in the way Jesus cast the demons into a herd of pigs – a threat to the livelihood of the swineherds. But another part is that the order of things had been upset. The outcast was no longer that and there was no telling what other societal changes were in store if Jesus stayed in the area. So they begged him to leave.

There is a sickness of preserving the status quo. Horrible destitution, abuse and oppression may exist, but people fear change more than they want any problems solved. “The devil I know” is still the devil, and the enemy of our souls and our Lord.

There are parts of the world where the practice of charity by Christians causes them to be hated and persecuted. Caste systems are in jeopardy when the mercy of God is on scene. Institutional evil is enormous in scope and adoption by the masses. Freedom is a direct threat to the tyranny of immobility of social station. Keep the poor poor and the rich rich at all costs.

But the cost is too much for Jesus. He heals and delivers because his love won’t allow anything else.

May I also do the same accounting; seeing the human waste and suffering kept in action by convention and its irrational fear.

O Lord, grant me eyes to see and wisdom to act upon it. In Jesus’ name.

After a long diatribe against the religious leaders of Israel, citing their vivid and widespread hypocrisy and corrupt hearts and murderous intents against any who would truly speak for God, Jesus spoke tenderly of the city of Jerusalem, their home base and the worldwide center of Judaism. His intent (and offer, still) was for reconciliation, even after their heinous crimes fed by the worst of human motives. This was an expression of amazing grace.

Jesus cited that a prophet must die in Jerusalem (Luke 13:33), alluding to his own death, thus adding his name to all those godly ones sent to help the city. Their confrontation of the sins of the nation were not tolerated, and the powers that were made sure they were heard no more.

Yet, the analogy of the hen with her chicks portrayed the heart’s desire of the prophets.

Confrontation of sin, in its accuracy and conviction, is often blunt and accusatory. But that doesn’t indicate advocacy for destruction and eternal condemnation. Jesus asked the question earlier in the chapter:

then said that “prophets and wise men and teachers” (v 34) would be sent to redeem and transform the serpentine leaders into children of God through his own shed blood. So, Jesus knew well the answer to the question: HE was the answer.

The sorrow of the refusal to repent and enter into the salvation offered by Jesus is deep. Jerusalem would fall some short years later, and all the pomp and glory of the nation the leaders so enjoyed and propped up would be destroyed. Yet Christianity would only flourish for millennia after this.

Let me, then, not resist conviction of sin and repent of whatever it highlights. Let my heart be kept soft and let me be gathered under the hen’s wings. Let me not refuse conviction, for it is given because of God’s love. And let me be sent even as a prophet, wise person or teacher even to an obstinate people, motivated by that same love. For through that, salvation comes.
